The 18,000-square-foot Castle di Sismano in Todi was put up for sale this week and even comes with its own source of income – a 22-room bed and breakfast and restaurant located right in the fortress itself.

There may be a string of châteaux on the market in Europe but this impressive listing comes with an additional 17 farmhouses in the nearby village and a housing development comprising of seven villas.

Also included is a church that was built in 1654, a village clock tower, garages, a warehouse, a historic wash house and on hot Italian summer days, residents can take a dip in the castle’s pool.

Castle di Sismano has an illustrious past and its royal owners have included Emperor Otto who donated the property to the family of Prince Corsini in 962 AD.

Over the past 1,054 years two members of the family became popes and its grounds are said to have seen a number of sieges and military disputes.
