A boat owner had an almighty shock when they arrived at the harbour to discover their vessel had completely sunk.

A picture of the stricken boat, submerged on its side, has been viewed more than 300,000 times online since it was uploaded less than 24 hours ago.

It is thought that someone must have forgotten to put the boat’s drain plug in, which allowed the water to seep in.

The boat was recovered though, as a picture shows it back on top of the water with liquid being pumped out.

The incident would reportedly have cost several thousand pounds in damages.

It is thought that the engine alone would cost a few thousand dollars to fix after being submerged in water.

The electrics on board were also estimated to have cost more than $20,000 (£15,000) and much of it would have been irrevocably damaged while under water.

The drain water plug is at the bottom of the boat and is used to drain any water that is in the vessel when it has been put on dry land.

It is a very common error to forget to put the drain plug back in when the boat is launched into the water.

As a result, it is featured on many To Do Lists for launching boats as the number one task.
